ACLS
The AHA’s ACLS course builds on the foundation of lifesaving basic life support skills, emphasizing the importance of continuous, high-quality CPR. This course reflects science and education from the American Heart Association Guidelines Update for CPR and Emergency Cardiovascular Care (ECC).
What does ACLS teach?
- Systematic approach (assessment)

- Defibrillation Intravenous (IV)/intraosseous (IO) access (information only)
- Use of medications
- Cardioversion
- Transcutaneous pacing
- High-performance teams
ACLS is for healthcare professionals who either direct or participate in the management of cardiac arrest, stroke, or other cardiopulmonary emergencies. This includes personnel in emergency response, emergency medicine, critical care/intensive care, and surgery such as Physicians, Nurses, and Paramedics, as well as others who need an ACLS course completion card for a job or other requirement.
Prerequisites
Participants are expected to:
- Have current BLS certification
- Be proficient in basic life support and ECG interpretation
- Understand ACLS pharmacology and emergency protocols.
The ACLS course ensures that healthcare professionals are prepared to provide high-quality, evidence-based emergency cardiovascular care in both hospital and pre-hospital settings.
