Adopt-A-Hydrant Program
Greetings, friends and neighbors of the South Lake County Fire Protection District.
We’re excited to introduce our next community-focused initiative—a collaboration between the Fire District and you, the community we proudly serve.
Building on the success of programs like Operation Seconds Count, which provided smoke alarms and fire extinguishers to community members in need, and Operation Force Multiplier, a one-of-a-kind effort where we distributed firefighting hand tools and water extinguishers to residents, we’ve seen firsthand how powerful these partnerships can be.
In 2025, as we celebrate the Centennial Anniversary of the South Lake County Fire Protection District, we’re launching a brand-new initiative: Operation Adopt-A-Hydrant.
Much like the successful "Adopt-a-Highway" programs, Operation Adopt-A-Hydrant invites community members to help keep local fire hydrants visible and accessible.
For the first 75 participants, this is your chance to adopt a hydrant near your home or on nearby vacant land that isn’t currently well-maintained.
If you have a hydrant on your property—or nearby—that is overgrown, hard to see, or not marked with a blue dot in the road, you can adopt it! Here's how:
- Take a 'Before' photo of the hydrant.
- Register on the South Lake County Fire District website by clicking on the link for the 'Adopt-A-Hydrant' program.
- Clear the area around the hydrant, maintaining a minimum of three feet of space free from vegetation or obstructions.
- Submit your 'After' photo of the hydrant, utilizing the website registration system.
- A Fire District Employee will visit your hydrant, verify that the work is completed, and place a Blue Hydrant Marker on the street.
We will feature Adopt-A-Hydrant participants (with permission) in our social media posts and on our website as community partners!
When firefighters can quickly locate a hydrant, it saves valuable time—and when seconds count, every moment matters.
Thank you for being an essential part of our community, for stepping up to Adopt-A-Hydrant, and for allowing us the honor to serve you.
With gratitude,
Your South Lake County Fire Protection District Team
